AI and Clinical Safety Policy
Last updated: September 18, 2026
Purpose
LDHI trains health professionals to use AI tools responsibly. This policy explains the principles that guide how AI is discussed and used within our curriculum.
1. AI Supports, Never Replaces, Clinical Judgment
Our curriculum teaches that AI decision-support tools are aids to clinical judgment, not replacements for it. Learners are trained to critically evaluate AI outputs rather than accept them uncritically.
2. Transparency and Explainability
We emphasize understanding how an AI tool reached a recommendation, including its data sources and known limitations, before applying that recommendation in care.
3. Patient Safety First
Course content prioritizes patient safety, informed consent, and appropriate escalation when AI tools are uncertain or produce outputs inconsistent with clinical presentation.
4. Data Privacy and Governance
Learners are trained on responsible handling of patient data used with AI tools, consistent with applicable privacy laws and institutional policy.
5. Bias and Equity
Our curriculum addresses the risk of algorithmic bias in AI tools, particularly as it relates to underrepresented populations and low-resource settings, and trains learners to recognize and mitigate these risks.
